I have been a coal miner for almost 35 year

I was in a hospital owned by the coal company that my dad worked for.  After growing up and trying to see the world and finaling coming back home.  I started working in the mine in Harlan County and after a couple of years there I went to the same company where all of my family had worked and the same company that had owned the hospital I was born in, the school I had gone too and even the house that I was raised in.    That company sold out and I moved on to the Middlesboro area of Kentucky, and worked there for 13 years before moving on the Alabama.

I presently work in a deep mine in Alabama that is the deepest coal mine on the North American Contenient.

I started mining in Janurary of 1974, when my youngest son was only 4 years old,  today he is a elcetrician at the same mine where I work.

Today this is a Coal Mine Museum, as I was growing up it was the Company store, or as we called it “The Big Store” Everything you needed you could get in this store.
Coal Mining Camps were great places to grow up.

Today as you can see this is called the School House Inn. This is the school that International Harverster built for the education of their employees children.
I went to that school from the first grade thru the ninth grade, and that is when the company gave the school to the Harlan County School System and they closed the High School and consolitadated it with Cumberland.
I chose to go to school at Lynch High School another coal camp built by U.S. Steel Corp.

It is a beautiful Inn, but it was a fantastic school

What a beautiful Inn. Thanks for sharing. I would like to go there and visit the museum and stay at the Inn. Just as soon as I get a chance I’ll take off for a day or two and go. I’ll let you know about the experience. I really appreciate all of your input on this site. I am honored to have you as a member of this community. I really enjoy reading about your experiences and I know that everyone else enjoys it too.
